Comment:

Since the main palace turned out to be too small to accommodate the royal court, two more residential buildings were constructed в 1775–1778 after the design of the Italian architect Domenico Merlini, including the Myślewicki Palace, which name derived from the village of Myślewice located nearby. The palace built in the style of ‘Stanislaw August’s Classicism’, was initially inhabited by the king’s courtiers, but as early as 1779 the king’s nephew Józef Poniatowski settled down in it. His initials can be discerned in the cartouche over the front entrance. The palace interior and exterior decoration has partially retained its original look. The comparison of the watercolour painting with the original enables to see that the artist significantly distorted the building proportions, as though it had been compressed horizontally. Just as in the other works by Zygmunt Vogel, the landscape is enlivened by moving and naïve staffage figures. Comments by Valery Shevchenko
