Comment:
The background of this still life resembles a plank of wood that has been planed smooth. Attached to it by a hook driven in closer to the top is a somewhat crumpled piece of paper carrying a sanguine drawing of a horse, a cow and a goat with the indistinct figures of more animals behind. In this case the task of deceiving the viewer’s eye is accomplished very successfully. The painting reproduces a wooden surface with illusionistic verisimilitude. The corners of the paper stand away from the board a little, casting shadows that have been painted with such precise imitation of reality that the viewer feels an urge to straighten the paper out. The painter’s exceptional skill simply compels one to believe the illusion for a time.
