The Lamentation

Flanders, 1650s

This painting is a compositionally almost identical variant of the Lamentation that Jordaens produced for the church of the Beguinage in Antwerp. The main elements of the composition accord with a description of the event in the anonymous 14th-century devotional text Meditations on the Life of Christ. It says there that when the secret followers of Christ, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, took Jesus’ body from the Cross, Joseph came down and, together with St John the Divine, Mary Magdalene, the Virgin Mary and her sisters, received the body of the Lord and they laid Him on the ground. His mother placed His head and shoulders in her lap, while Mary Magdalene took the feet at which she had once received forgiveness.
