Paolo Veronese created this superb composition for the Church of SS Giovanni e Paolo in Venice. Master of grandiose festive scenes, towards the end of his life Veronese turned to tragic subjects. Just three figures are present here, plunged deep in gloom and silence: the Virgin Mary and the Angel bend over the body of Christ. Mary's face is full of sorrow, her white veil pulled over her forehead in monastic style, while the angel gently lifts the wounded hand of the Saviour. The streaming pink robes of the angel and the gold of his hair create a contrast with the cold tones of the dead body.
