The subject of this portrait, Everhard Jabach (1610-1695), was a major banker and art collector. He was born in Cologne but moved to Paris in 1638. His collection eventually entered the Louvre holdings when it was purchased by Louis XIV in 1671. The landscape behind the banker depicts the Ypres Tower, the remains of a 12th-century Norman citadel in Eastern Sussex, England. Van Dyck drew this citadel a number of times and may have used these sketches when he painted the portrait of Everhard Jabach during his last stay in England.
